Everything you need to make a pumpkin spice Frappuccino at home

Put your own twist on the Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino this fall with homemade pumpkin spice or pumpkin spice syrup. You can even make a coffee-free batch for the kids.

How to make the perfect Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino

As fall approaches, fall favorites are once again on everybody’s mind. And with the change in seasons, there is a change in menu options at cafes like Starbucks. And one of their most anticipated menu items is the Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino. It’s a blend of ginger, allspice, nutmeg and cloves combined with milk, ice and whipped cream. A spicy, festive drink like this is nearly synonymous with the season.

But fall comes and goes all too quickly, and many wait all year long for their favorite beverage to return. Luckily, if you’re tired of waiting, you can now make a Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino at any time of the year. Just follow these steps.

What is a Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino?

There are several ways to make a Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino. One of the most popular methods is using a specific blend of coffee and vanilla beans combined with milk, ice and pumpkin spice. If you’re sensitive to caffeine or don’t like the coffee flavor, there’s a coffee-free option that relies on the creamy pumpkin as the base instead of coffee. Both versions are served cold and make for a perfect drink on a warmer fall day.

Coffee-based Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino

If you’re looking for a quick pick-me-up in the morning, a coffee-based Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino is a great way to get going.

Make the pumpkin spice flavoring

To make the iconic pumpkin spice flavor, gather together the following spices:

Measure a teaspoon of ground cinnamon and put it into a mixing bowl

Add 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg, ginger and allspice.

Next, add 1/8 teaspoon of cardamom, and if you want a more pungent flavor, 1/8 teaspoon of cloves.

Mix in a dash of black pepper.

Use a spoon to combine the spices thoroughly.

Feel free to experiment with the spices until you find the right blend of sweet and spicy for your palate.

You can use this pumpkin spice mix right away or store it in an airtight container for later. If you store it at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture, it should last up to six months.

Brew the base

To make the base of your Frappuccino, you’ll need the following:

  • Two cups crushed ice
  • One cup espresso or cold brew coffee
  • 3/4 milk of choice (whole milk, oat milk, almond milk, etc.)
  • Two tablespoons sweetener (Stevia, granulated sugar, agave, etc.)

Use either an espresso machine or use instant espresso to make the coffee base. For instant espresso, simply combine 1/4 cup hot water with a teaspoon of the coffee powder until the powder dissolves completely.

Alternatively, you can use cold brew coffee as your Frappuccino base. To make cold brew, use a coffee grinder to grind dark roast coffee beans into a coarse powder. Next, transfer the ground coffee into a glass container and combine it with water. A good ratio for a strong cold brew is one part coffee and four parts water. For example, for every 1/4 cup of ground coffee, use one cup of water.

Stir until the coffee grounds become saturated with the water. Then, seal the container with a lid or saran wrap and place it in the refrigerator to steep for at least 12 hours.

Then, strain the coffee through a cheesecloth or fine filter into a blender. Add the crushed ice, milk and sweetener. If you’re using larger ice cubes, only use half the ice to start so you can break it up using the pulse setting on the blender. Then, add in the rest of the ice. Blend until the consistency is thick and creamy.

Combine the ingredients

Now that you have the base and pumpkin spice mix, all you need to do is combine them. Add 1 1/2 teaspoons of pumpkin spice to your base mix and use the pulse setting again to blend it in. Then, pour the Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino into a glass and serve it cold. For a finishing touch, add whipped cream or a sprinkle of cinnamon on top.

Coffee-free Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino

This recipe does not require coffee, so you can enjoy it any time of day without an unwanted energy boost. For a coffee-free version of this beverage, you’ll need a pumpkin spice syrup base, ice and milk.

Make pumpkin spice syrup

To make the pumpkin spice syrup, you’ll need:

  • Granulated sugar or sugar substitute
  • Canned pumpkin puree
  • Condensed milk
  • Pumpkin spice (see the recipe above)
  • Water
  • Saucepan

Combine a 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup granulated sugar in a saucepan and put it on medium heat until it begins to simmer. Stir constantly until the sugar completely dissolves, which should take about five minutes.

Once the sugar dissolves, add 2/3 cup of pumpkin puree, 14-ounces of condensed milk and a teaspoon of pumpkin spice. Stir until well combined. For extra cinnamon flavor, add two cinnamon sticks to the pan. Let the mixture simmer on low for 20 minutes, stirring regularly.

Taste the syrup to make sure it has the desired flavor. For a spicier flavor, add in some ground ginger or a dash of ground black pepper. To make it sweeter, add more sugar.

Remove the pan from heat, carefully remove the cinnamon sticks and let the pumpkin spice syrup cool. Store it in a covered container and refrigerate if you don’t plan to use it right away. It will last three to five days.

Mix all the ingredients

In a blender, blend 1/2 cup of pumpkin spice syrup, one cup crushed ice and 1/3 cup of milk until smooth. Add 1 1/2 teaspoons of pumpkin spice and pulse everything together. If the consistency is too thin, you can add another 1/2 cup of pumpkin spice syrup. It may take a few minutes to thicken, but you can always add more ice if you want it even thicker. For a creamier beverage, use whole milk.

Pour the Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino into a glass. Top it with whipped cream or a cinnamon stick and enjoy.

Nutritional value of Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino

A 24-ounce Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino has the following nutritional value:

  • 550 calories (if using whole milk)
  • 90 grams of sugar
  • 10 grams of saturated fat
  • 105-125 milligrams caffeine (the same as a 16-ounce latte from your coffee shop, unless you add additional shots)

To reduce the caloric content in your drink, switch from whole milk to oat, almond or coconut milk. For a healthier sugar alternative, try using a sweetener substitute like Stevia or sugar-free syrup. You can also skip the whipped cream.
